Info

2026 course changes – but we still finish on the BEACH!

Following the tragic events involving Mauao in February 2026, access to the base track is currently prohibited. As a result, some changes have been made to the courses for this year’s Mitre 10 Mega Tauranga City to Surf.

The half marathon and 5km will change course to keep the distance. However, the historic 11km City to Surf will be shortened to 8.5kms until the use of Mauao is restored. Updated maps and course descriptions are now available.

We appreciate your understanding as we work with the circumstances and continue to support our local community. While we may not be able to access the base track, the beach hasn’t moved – the iconic sand finish line will still be waiting for you!

Mauao has always been at the heart of this event, and we hope to bring the buzz back to the beach. Whether running or walking, we want to see your energy turn up and support the Mount as it rebuilds and recovers, and look forward to the future when we can utilise this amazing track once again.

21.1 km

The Foundation Clinic City to Surf Half Marathon starts at Sulphur Point, Tauranga, and follows a scenic route around the city and harbour edge. 2026 sees Harbour Drive added to the course before taking in a loop of the Daisy Hardwick Track. Crossing the harbour bridge is the only “hill” in this now flat course, as you make your way to the finish line on the sand at the Mount Main Beach.

8.5 km

The United Airlines City to Surf 8.5km event starts at Sulphur Point, Tauranga, and takes participants on a picturesque journey to Mount Maunganui. After crossing the Harbour Bridge, the course follows Totara Street through Coronation Park and along the stunning Pilot Bay waterfront before heading into Adams Avenue. The event finishes on the sand at Mount Main Beach.

5 km

The Bay of Plenty Times “Surf to Surf” 5km event starts and finishes on Mount Main Beach. Participants follow the scenic beachfront boardwalk towards Leisure Island before joining the hard sand along the shoreline to Tay Street. The course then returns via the boardwalk, offering stunning coastal views before finishing back on the sandy beach. A true beach run experience!

Important Information

Walking Division
Walkers will start after the runners for the 21.1km & 8.5km events – this is to avoid congestion on the course for added safety. We value our walkers and wish to ensure that the experience is a positive one for all entered. To ensure this we rely on entrants’ integrity that walkers WALK the complete event. Please participate in the spirit of the event and abide by walking criteria. Any walking competitor seen running will be automatically classified in the running results and no correspondence will be entered into. If competitors are unsure whether they may run & walk different sections of the course, it is requested that you enter the “Run” division.

Prams/Buggies/Strollers

Headphones
For your safety, we strongly recommend you avoid wearing headphones or audio devices during the event. Staying alert and aware helps keep both you and others safe on the course.

Sand Challenge Finish

A great run leads to the sand!

It’s not called City to “Surf” for nothing. The challenge of this event is the final kick to the finish line on the sandy beach of Mount Maunganui. All event distances finish on the soft sand outside the Mt Maunganui Surf Lifesaving Club, so be sure to leave something in the tank for those final few hundred metres!
